Eating the Right Foods Better at Lowering Cholesterol

A pair of studies found that eating the right foods is more effective at lowering the “bad cholesterol” (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C) than avoiding the wrong foods and just as effective as cholesterol lowering drugs.

The first study compared those who ate according to a “dietary portfolio” of vegetables, soy protein and nuts with those who ate a “low-saturated fat therapeutic diet” (low cholesterol control diet). Researchers found that the “percentage LDL-C reductions for each dietary portfolio were significantly more than the control diet.”

The second study compared three groups: those who ate diets low in cholesterol, those who ate according to the dietary portfolio and those eating diets low in cholesterol who also took a statin (a cholesterol lowering drug). Researchers found that “there were no significant differences in efficacy between the statin and dietary portfolio treatments” but both were much more effective at lowering cholesterol than just eating foods low in cholesterol.

The choice here is obvious. If you want to lower your “bad cholesterol” or keep it low, you can either eat wisely or take drugs. While drugs may seem like a more appealing choice, take a few moments to look up the known potential side effects (not to mention the side effects that may not yet be known).  You will want to avoid these side effects at all costs, even if it means you have to eat your vegetables.
