Give Birth on Your Side
There are several issues that have been raised regarding giving birth in the lithotomy position (laying on your back with your legs pulled up). Critics suggest that this position is for the convenience of the doctor, not the welfare of the mother.
One study has shown that the lateral or side lying position decreases the likelihood of damage to the perineum. Researchers found that “analysis, including all participants showed an increase of 47 percent in the likelihood of an intact perineum for the lateral position when compared with the lithotomy position.”
