Heat  and Constipation

While you are out enjoying the summer weather, becoming dehydrated from the warmth and the many activities you can enjoy can become a problem.

When your body needs water for its processes, it draws water away from elimination processes, such as urine and fecal transport (pooping).  It does this through the kidneys and the intestinal walls of the large bowel.  This may lead to constipation.

Chronic constipation (three or fewer bowel movements weekly; hard to pass, dry stool; and the sensation of incomplete evacuation during 12 of the past 24 weeks) may be triggered by: dehydration; lack of dietary fiber; insufficient physical activity (or loss of fluids from too much activity without replenishment); low thyroid; nerve dysfunction; medication (including antacids, antidepressants and pain pills); physical obstructions; irritable bowel syndrome; and more.

Whatever the cause, your doctor may suggest using stool softeners, laxatives or stimulants. Unfortunately, about 50 percent of the time, they cause unpleasant side effects or don’t solve your problem. So researchers are developing a constipation-busting vibrating capsule that you swallow! Preliminary results indicate that it makes intestine walls undulate, which helps show waste the way out.

But for now, to keep your bowel traffic moving, drink 64 ounces of water and eat plenty of fiber — nine servings of veggies and fruit, and 100 percent whole grains daily. Plus my favorite, a teaspoon of psyllium husks in water at the start of every meal. Complete your “clear tunnel” project with a walking program; aim for 10,000 steps daily.

And don’t forget 10 minutes of meditation or yoga daily to reduce stress. Now you’re good to go.
