New Findings Cement Ties Between Kidney Disease, Cognitive Problems

New research confirms the association between kidney disease and cognitive impairment, as well as structural brain changes.
The findings, from the Systolic Blood Pressure INTervention (SPRINT) cognition substudy (SPRINT-MIND), “cement the association between kidney damage and cognitive functioning, suggesting that albumin in the urine and changes in brain structure are likely both representations of the same vascular process, just in different organs,” Dr. Daniel Weiner, of Tufts Medical Center in Boston, said in a statement.
“This manifests with worse brain function, particularly in domains linked to cerebrovascular disease,” he added.
Dr. Weiner presented the findings November 17 during Kidney Week 2016 hosted by the American Society of Nephrology in Chicago.
