Soft Drinks = Teen Violence
Mixing sugar and caffeine in soft drinks may seem harmless, but recent research suggests otherwise. The study, published in the Injury Prevention journal, found that “there was a significant and strong association between soft drinks and violence. There may be a direct cause-and-effect relationship, perhaps due to the sugar or the caffeine content of soft drinks.”
In their examination of teens who drank non-diet soft drinks, researchers noted that “frequent soft drink consumption was associated with a 9–15% point increase in the probability of engaging in aggressive actions.” The authors added that “adolescents who drank more than five cans of soft drinks per week were significantly more likely to have carried a weapon and to have been violent with peers, family members and dates.”
Given the plethora of beverage choices, soft drinks should be avoided.
