Vigorous Exercise Burns Calories after You Finish Your Workout

It’s great to see the calorie counter climb as you work out on a machine that has such a feature. Burning 400 calories in 30 minutes helps quantify your progress and may even give you license to eat something sweet.
A recent study found that you don’t stop burning calories when you step off the treadmill. In fact, the benefits of your workout continue for hours afterwards.
In this study, men spent 45 minutes cycling burning an average of 519 calories. But over the next 14 hours, they burned another 190 calories more than they would have if they had not cycled.
While everyone is different, that works out to about one-third more calories than calculated during the workout. That means that if the calorie counter reads 400 at the end of vigorous exercise, you will burn another 140 calories more.
